The Leahy War Victims Fund: A Legacy of Support

DDC is proud to share our latest documentary, a moving tribute to the resilience and solidarity of the global disability rights movement. The piece focuses on the profound legacy of the Leahy War Victims Fund, a cornerstone program that has supported the movement’s ethos of “nothing about us without us.”

Tasked with capturing the journey of this USAID-funded initiative to provide sustainable rehabilitation services to civilian victims, particularly those afflicted by mobility-related injuries, DDC’s team embarked on a narrative odyssey spanning continents and decades.

At the helm of this production, our post-production supervisor Natalia de la Cuesta meticulously crafted a story that honors the fund's history and elevates the voices of its beneficiaries:

"It has been a formidable challenge, finding the essence of over twenty interviews conducted across Vietnam, Laos, and the United States. We carefully selected testimonies from diverse leaders, healthcare professionals, and social advocates, whose tireless efforts have amplified the program's impact and elevated the cause of individuals with disabilities globally."

Weaving together narratives from Vietnam and Laos, nations personally impacted by war, Natalia and our team of adept editors and motion graphics designers painstakingly curated a mosaic of interviews, archival footage, and photographs. The documentary also casts a spotlight on the fund's international reach over three decades, underscoring its enduring significance.

Natalia emphasizes the collaborative spirit that fueled its development: “From the gorgeous footage captured in the field by DDC collaborator Daniel St. Ours and our co-founder Jack Gordon, through the cooperative exchange of ideas with USAID and project partners during post-production, our process was infused with inspiration, driving DDC to deliver quality content from inception to completion.

Our film shows that the triumph of the Leahy War Victims Fund offers a beacon of hope and a pathway to dignity for those scarred by the ravages of war.

As we embark on our next cinematic endeavor, we remain steadfast in our commitment to shaping narratives that illuminate, inspire, and empower.

We look forward to working with you on our next groundbreaking film!
